Holiday Baking Alternatives

Baking with a diagnosis can be challenging whether it’s gluten free, heart disease, diabetes, or even if you simply run out of an ingredient that the recipe calls for. Well, we’re here to help! Here are some quick and simple substitutions that you may already have hiding in your pantry:

Butter 

1 cup butter = ½ cup nut butter + ½ cup melted coconut oil 

1 cup butter = ¾ cup olive oil 

1 cup butter = 1 cup avocado 

1 cup butter = ⅞ cup avocado oil 

1 cup butter = 1 cup applesauce 

1 cup butter = 1 cup pumpkin puree

Buttermilk

1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup plain greek yogurt 

Breadcrumbs 

1 cup breadcrumbs = 1 cup of cracker crumbs, corn flakes, or rolled oats – be sure to pulse in a blender

Cake Flour

1 cup cake flour = ¾ cup sifted all purpose flour + 1 Tbsp cornstarch 

Chocolate

1 oz unsweetened chocolate = 3 tbsps natural unsweetened cocoa powder + 1 tbsp unsalted butter, vegetable oil, or shortening 

Cream (Heavy)

1 cup heavy cream = 2/3 cups whole milk + ⅓ cup unsalted butter 

Cornstarch 

1 tbsp cornstarch = 3 tbsp all purpose flour 

Eggs

1 egg = ¼ cup applesauce

1 egg = 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water

1 egg = ½ banana mashed + ½ tsp baking powder 

1 egg = 1 tbsp chia seeds + 1 cup water (let sit for 10 minutes) 

Sour Cream

1 cup sour cream = 1 cup plain yogurt or greek yogurt 

Vegetable Oil

1 cup vegetable oil = 1 cup applesauce = 1 cup fruit puree 

Wheat Flour 

1 cup wheat flour = 1 cup cassava flour 

1 cup wheat flour = 1 cup amaranth flour 

1 cup wheat flour = 1 cup quinoa flour 

1 cup wheat flour = 1 cup rice flour 

1 cup wheat flour = 1 cup sorghum flour 

White Flour 

1 cup white flour =  ¾ cup wheat flour 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup bean puree 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup cassava flour 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup amaranth flour 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup quinoa flour 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup rice flour 

1 cup white flour = 1 cup sorghum flour 

Choose something that makes the most sense for your recipe. For example: subbing 1 stick of butter for nut butter and coconut oil will change the flavor of the finished product!
