Thirsty Thursday – Hard Kombucha

Hard kombucha seems to be all the rage lately but is it really worth the hype? Kombucha in and of itself is fermented tea, and since it’s fermented it has trace amounts of alcohol, around 1% or less. Now, cue the hard stuff. With hard kombucha, these could contain up to 8% alcohol by volume (ABV) depending on the brewer. They do this by increasing the amount of sugar and yeast in their recipes which delivers that boozy feeling. One major thing to think about here to help you choose a better booch is to choose a lower ABV, which in turn will yield lower sugar levels. Another thing to consider is the ever-trendy probiotic talk. Now, while hard kombuchas do offer this benefit, you’ll actually gain more probiotics (aka: good gut bugs) benefits with fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tofu, miso and a few more you can read up on here. So if you think you’re chugging in wellness with hard kombucha, hold tight. Alcohol is still something to be taken in with mindfulness and moderation. 1 Serving (1.5oz shot; 1, 5oz glass of wine; 1, 12oz glass of beer) is a single drink per day for a female and a double drink for a male. So while this isn’t necessarily a healthier choice over regular alcohol it is a fun way to liven up your taste buds with fun and unique flavors with a few benefits and still enjoying responsibly.
